Course Outline

A course designed by podiatrists for podiatrists with a special interest in developing their sports injury management knowledge. Online and on demand with lectures, workshops and discussions with surgeons, sports physicians, podiatrists, radiologists and physios.

Presenter's Bio

Paula Baird-Colt 
Physiosports Brighton

Paula Baird-Colt graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and began her professional dance career with the West Australian Ballet before joining The Australian Ballet.

After 17 years as a professional dancer, Paula retrained in the Pilates Method and commenced teaching at the Australian Ballet School a dance specific conditioning program (2001 – 2007). A member of The Australian Ballet’s multidisciplinary medical team (2006 – 2019) as body conditioning specialist, Paula innovated and delivered injury prevention, rehabilitation and repertoire specific conditioning programs. Paula extended her role at The Australian Ballet to work in the Education Unit (2008 – 2015) under Education Consultant Helen Cameron on the company’s education partnerships and outreach program ‘Out There, The Australian Ballet in schools’.

Paula’s special interest areas are hips, lower legs, pointe work, dance footwear and the use of real time ultra sound as a biofeedback movement education tool.

Her teaching practice combines visual, auditory, and tactile cues naturally and a capacity to individualise a range of exercises from various movement methods.

In addition to her work with professional dancers Paula’s expertise is sought by elite athletes. A member of the International Association of Dance Medicine & Science she has presented internationally and here in Australia.

Dr Ebonie Rio

Latrobe Sport & Exercise Medicine Research Centre

Ebonie is a post doc researcher at La Trobe University and has completed her PhD in tendon pain, Masters Sports Phys, B. Phys (Hons) and B. App Sci. Her clinical career has included Australian Institute of Sport, Australian Ballet Company, Australian Ballet School, Melbourne Heart Football Club, Alphington Sports Medicine Centre, Victorian Institute of Sport, 2006 Commonwealth Games, 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, 2010 Singapore Youth Olympics, 2012 London Paralympics, 18 months travelling with Disney's The Lion King stage show (Melbourne and Shanghai tour).

Dr Adam Castricum

Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre, Axis Sports Medicine Queenstown

Adam is passionate about sport and exercise and takes great satisfaction out of helping all members of the community across all stages of life achieve their goals in a safe, enjoyable and healthy fashion whether they are elite athletes or simply inactive patients wishing to get active and lead a healthier, more rewarding life.

Adam and his young family have recently taken the plunge across the ditch for a skichange sabbatical to join the Axis team in Queenstown. Before that he spent twenty years training and setting up a specialist practice in Melbourne, at the world renowned tertiary Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre, where he was Head of the Medical Department for the last 10 years. He continues to hold occasional clinics in person at OPSMC when he returns to Melbourne and provide remote video telehealth services to his Australian patient base.

Adam became a Fellow with the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP) in 2008 after completing 6 years of training in Melbourne and Sydney. Soon after, he was appointed Chief Medical Officer for Athletics Australia and headed up the medical team for the successful Australian Track and Field team at both the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympic Games. From 2014 - 2017 he worked with the excellent medical and conditioning team at Hawthorn Football Club, the highlight being the 2014 and 2015 Premierships. He also worked as an event doctor at the 2019 World Ironman Champs in Kona, Hawaii.

In 2016, Adam was elected President of ACSEP and held this post for three years until early 2019. As President, Adam also sat on the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC). He strongly advocated for equality and diversity, improving indigenous, regional and remote health outcomes, as well as doctors mental health and making specialist Sport and Exercise Medical care accessible to all members of the community. Adam continues much of this work as one of the Health Champions of Change Coalition members and mentors indigenous doctors on the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association (AIDA) mentorship program. He continues to be actively involved in teaching and mentoring ACSEP Registrars, and Chairs the ACSEP Interview and Selection Committee and Mental Health Working Groups. He is also current Chair of the New Zealand / Aotearoa Osteoarthritis Summit Committee.

His professional areas of interest include athletics, all codes of football, triathlon, alpine skiing, lower limb injuries, exercise prescription, adolescent injuries, fatigue in athletes and exercise-induced asthma, on which he completed his Masters Research in 2008.

Dr Andrew Rotstein 
Victoria House Medical Imaging

Dr Andrew Rotstein is the clinical director of MRI, CT and Nuclear medicine at Victoria House Medical Imaging. Andrew has a keen interest in musculoskeletal radiology and is a local expert in Radiology guided musculoskeletal and spinal injections.

Andrew is a Monash University graduate and a former Melbourne University anatomy tutor. Andrew trained as a Radiologist at Royal Melbourne Hospital and subsequently completed fellowships in Neuroradiology, Breast imaging and Musculoskeletal imaging.

Andrew has given numerous radiology presentations at national conferences and is actively involved in 3T MRI and ultrasound research. Andrew is a Radiology specialist for athletes of AFL teams, Cricket Australia, Australian Open tennis, VIS, Rugby and A-league soccer teams.

He was an official Radiologist for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and has an ongoing involvement in trainee education at Victoria House Medical Imaging and Melbourne University.

Mr Daniel Goldbloom

Orthopaedic Associates Melbourne

Daniel completed his medical degree through Monash University before undertaking orthopaedic training with the Royal Australasian College of surgeons, obtaining fellowship in 2011.

Daniel has completed Foot and Ankle fellowships with the Prince of Wales hospital, Sydney and The Robert Jones Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic hospital, United Kingdom.

He currently holds a public consultant post at Frankston hospital where he enjoys teaching and being involved in complex cases. Daniel has written book chapters on “forefoot pathology” and “nerve lesions around the foot and ankle”.

Dr Daniel Bonanno 
University of Canberra, La Trobe University

Daniel is a Senior Lecturer in Podiatry, with a particular interest in the management and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders of the foot and ankle in physically active populations. He is also the Graduate Research Coordinator for Podiatry and Prosthetics & Orthotics in the School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport at La Trobe University.

Daniel completed his PhD in 2019, where he investigated the use of foot orthoses for the prevention of injury in military recruits. He was awarded the Nancy Millis Medal for completing a PhD thesis of exceptionally high quality. Daniel is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research and the Victorian Director for Sports and Exercise Podiatry Australia.

Daniel is currently involved in several research projects with colleagues and students, including evaluations of running retraining, foot orthoses and footwear. His research has primarily included, but is not limited to, laboratory-based biomechanical studies and clinical trials. Daniel has published over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and 1 book chapter.

Daniel has supervised eight Honours students to completion, and currently supervises two PhD students and one Honours student.

Daniel proudly acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nations as the Traditional Custodians of the land and its waterways on which he lives and works.

Dr Matt Chamberlain

Sports Physician

Matt is a Sports Physician who graduated from the University of Sydney in 1998. Matt is currently the Chief Medical Officer (Head Doctor) for Carlton Football Club in the AFL. Matt spent many years working in General Medicine, Ophthalmology & Emergency Medicine initially and over the last fifteen years, he has transitioned into full-time sports medicine and is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP).

Matt has knowledge and experience covering a wide range of sports, including Australian Rules Football, Soccer, Netball, Swimming, Gymnastics and Basketball at an elite level. He has had medical involvement at both a Commonwealth and Olympics games with the Australian Swimming Team (2012-2021).

Outside sporting injuries, he has a special interest in conservative management of degenerative joint, tendon, hypermobility disorders and other musculoskeletal conditions. He believes strongly in the role of nutritional, lifestyle and exercise approaches for many of these issues, and advocates for a multimodal approach to optimise outcomes.

Beyond this, he has experience using injectable intervention for joint and tendon disorders including the use of prolotherapy, high volume injection techniques, hyaluronic acid, ACS (Autologous Conditioned Serum) and mesenchymal stem cells. He has been involved in research into the role of both autologous and allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells in knee osteoarthritis and has publication pending for these studies. He has also recently been published internationally on medical conditions specific to open water swimming.

Jason Agosta

Jason Agosta Podiatry, East Melbourne

Jason Agosta trained in Podiatry at La Trobe University and graduated in 1988. He was awarded the Harley award for Excellence in Diagnosis and Orthoses Manufacture. Jason was a lecturer at La Trobe University for 6 years teaching sports and musculo-skeletal injuries.

Jason's past private practice experience has included 12 years of working at Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre before having an extended break to pursue media commitments. This included the hosting of health and sports science segments for Channel 9, ABC Radio and Run Like You Stole Something on Triple R radio.

Jason has continued study in biomechanics and has studied the 'Effect of Running Spikes on Achilles Tendon Load in Distance Runners’ at Victoria University. He has also been involved in shoe design for several groups including Nike and continues to be involved in the education of footwear and the effects on the lower limb.

His private practice focus is on difficult foot and lower limb problems, orthoses for sports, post-operative care, running training and technique and footwear for walking and running.

Jason has been the Podiatrist for Tennis Australia and The Australian Open for 17 years. He has also been the Podiatrist for Essendon Football Club for 23 years. Other teams and groups have included Melbourne Rebels Rugby Union, Melbourne Storm Rugby League, Australian Ballet School and Athletics Australia track athletes.

Jason has represented Australia at the World Cross Country Championships and now competes in mountain bike and local surfing events.

John Osborne

Physiosports Brighton

John is an experienced Sports Podiatrist and the first Podiatrist in Australia to successfully earn the Certified Sports Podiatrist credential awarded by the Australian Podiatry Association. He is currently completing his PhD at La Trobe University about the role of muscle strength in plantar heel pain (plantar fasciitis).

He is particularly interested in injuries such as heel pain, shin splints, sesamoiditis, patellofemoral pain, and tendinopathies of the foot and ankle. John also has experience managing patients with rheumatological conditions (e.g., arthritis), blisters, ingrown toenails, general foot care, and chronic disease management such as diabetes.

With a background in strength and conditioning, John always considers a holistic view of the foot and ankle, focusing not only on foot orthoses but individualized rehabilitation and strengthening programs for each of his patients. John has also managed both amateur and elite sportsmen and sportswomen from AFL (Australian Rules), gymnastics, basketball, soccer, triathlon, and cricket.


Nicki Quigley 
Podiatrist, Hawthorn Football Club & Bayside Sports Podiatry

Nicki has been working as a Podiatrist since 2001, and specialises in the assessment, diagnosis and management of sporting injuries of the lower limb and foot.

She has been the Podiatrist for the Hawthorn Football Club (men's and more recently women's) for 18 years and consults in private practice in Sandringham.

She has a diverse knowledge of all sports, and has treated Olympic track and field Athletes, international soccer players, AFL footballers from numerous clubs, national tennis players, national netballers, Victorian cricket players and NRL players.

Mr Otis Wang

Melbourne Foot & Ankle Orthopeadic Surgeon

Mr Otis Wang is a specialist foot ankle and knee orthopaedic surgeon. He specialised in bunion correction, arthroscopic or keyhole surgery, and sports and reconstruction surgery such as lateral ligament and syndesmotic reconstructions.

Mr Wang obtained his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1998 and completed his surgical training in Victoria gaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2006. He then completed international fellowships in Cambridge and Bristol in the UK, and visited various Bunion surgeons throughout Europe focusing on Bunion correction techniques.
